A man in Scotland has admitted to faking the “Gay Girl in Damascus” webpage and the related faux police arrest.  

He says:

I feel that I have created an important voice for issues that I feel strongly about.

I only hope that people pay as much attention to the people of the Middle East and their struggles in thıs year of revolutions. The events there are beıng shaped by the people living them on a daily basis. I have only tried to illuminate them for a western audience.

Right, because a great way to give a voice to people on the ground is to fake a website and create an entire political scandal.  And getting into a fake relationship with a real girl via the internet totally helps with your street cred.

This guy doesn’t seem to have any idea the damage he has done to internet activism.  That he has actually given people a reason to ignore the voices of activists in the Middle East because they might be fake.  He doesn’t seem to understand the arrogance he displayed in creating a fake person to co-opt other people’s struggles.
